Underlined text, printed URLs, and the table of contents become live links on screen; and you tin apply your browsersouthward commands to modify the size of the text or search for fundamental words. If you print, I advise black-and-white, two-sided printing.
Summary: Some common problems on the TI-83 or TI-84 figurer await intimidating because the messages are strange, but theyre easy to fix. This page helps you with the TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-83 Plus Silverish Edition, TI-84 Plus, and TI-84 Plus Argent Edition.

Error Letters
General advice: Well-nigh messages give you a choice of Quit
and Goto
. If itsouth available, ever pick Goto
: the TI-83/84 volition show you lot the exact spot where it constitute something wrong. Thats usually enough of a inkling that y'all tin figure out whatdue south incorrect.
Syntax
Press [2
] for Goto
and recheck your equation on the Y=
screen.
Brand sure you pressed the [X,T,θ,n
] primal for x and not the [
] times key. Also, make sure you distinguished between the minus key [−
] and the change sign key [(-)
]: the change sign primal makes a shorter minus sign than the minus fundamental.
Window Range
Press [1
] for Quit
and then printing [WINDOW
].
Make sure your Xmax
is greater than Xmin
and Ymax
is greater than Ymin
.
Dim Mismatch
Are you doing a scatterplot?
Press [Y=
] and cheque that only one of Plot1
, Plot2
, Plot3
is highlighted.
Then press [2nd
] [STAT PLOT
] followed by the number of the active plot. ([STAT PLOT
] is the shifted [Y=
] key.) Cheque which list numbers are mentioned.
Printing [STAT
] [ENTER
] and make sure that you have equal numbers of entries in the ii lists.
Are you doing regression analysis?
Note the two lists mentioned in your regression command, LinReg(ax+b)
or similar. Press [STAT
] [ENTER
] and brand sure that you have the same number of entries in the two lists, at least two rows.
Are y'all doing anything else?
Press [1
] for Quit
and then press [Y=
]. Make certain that there are no highlights on Plot1 Plot2 Plot3
at the pinnacle of the screen. If one is highlighted, cursor to it and press [ENTER
] to conciliate information technology.
Invalid Dim
This message has several possible causes.
- If you become this when making some kind of plot, you probably forgot that you have i of
Plot1 Plot2 Plot3
turned on, and it refers to two lists that dont accept the same length. The cure is to printing [Y=
] and plow off the unwanted plot. - If yousre actually doing something that needs lists, such every bit a regression, only your lists dont take the same length, you become this message. Press [
STAT
] [1
] and check your lists. - You as well go this message when you give the TI-83 a listing or matrix where information technology expected a variable or number, or vice versa. For instance, on the STAT PLOT screen, you may mean to press [
2d
] [L1
] but if you miss the [2nd
] you actually type a Y. In the same way yous might blazon a Z where y'all intend to type L2. - Karl Wein offers another possibility. You tin can create a list called
L1
, simply that is not the same as the predefined list calledL1
(annotation the small-scale-capital L), and of class similarly for lists two through 6. If yous accidentally delete a predefined list from the editor, brand sure to bring information technology back with theSetUpEditor
command.
In general, when yous see this message you lot need to check carefully through what youve washed to make sure that yous used lists where y'all were supposed to, and nowhere else.
ERR:Version
A TI-83 (not Plus or Silver) is trying to receive something that it tin cant handle. If what youre trying to transfer is a plan, these features work in the TI-83 Plus and all later TI-83s and TI-84s, but not in the original TI-83:
- archiving operations
- ii-character labels that start with a letter
- whatever lower-case text in strings
- the Greek letters ρ (rho) and σ (sigma) in strings, but the statistics variable σx can be used
ERR:DOMAIN
Youve passed an wrong statement to a function, such equally cos-1(2) or pxl-on(160,160).
List Troubles
Itdue south easy to hide 1 without intending to, just by pressing the [DEL
] key while positioned on a column head.
To bring back L1 through L6 in that order, printing [STAT
] [5
] [ENTER
]. This runs the SetUpEditor
command; you will not lose any numbers from any lists.
I tin cant clear the numbers from a list.
Employ the arrow keys to move to the column heading, not the commencement number of the listing. Then press [CLEAR
] [ENTER
]. All the numbers from the list will be erased, and the cursor will move to the first row and so that you lot tin can brainstorm entering numbers.
I left out a number from my list.
No, y'all dont take to re-enter the whole list. Use the arrow keys to movement to the number just after where the missing number should go. Printing [2nd
] [INS
] (the shifted [DEL
] central) and a space volition open up in the listing.
Graphing Troubles
Are you plotting specific points?
Printing [ZOOM
] [9
], which is ZoomStat
. That tells the TI-83/84 to adjust the window to prove your points or histogram with maximum detail.
Are you plotting ane or more functions?
If you dont see your function graph anywhere, your window is probably set to a region of the xy airplane the graph only doesnt happen to become through. Depending on the function, one of these techniques will work:
-
ZoomFit
is a skillful beginning endeavour. Press the [ZOOM
] button, then [0
] (zilch). (Thanks to Marilyn Webb for this suggestion.) - Y'all can try to zoom out (similar going higher to run into more of the aeroplane) by pressing [
ZOOM
] [iii
] [ENTER
]. If y'all demand to, printing [ENTER
] again to zoom out further. - Finally, yous tin can straight adjust the window to select a specific region. Set
Xmin
andXmax
and then that they include the ten domain you lotre interested in, andYmin
andYmax
to include the y range you want to see.
Are you plotting a histogram?
Printing [WINDOW
]. Set the Xs in terms of your class limits, every bit follows:
-
Xmin
= i class width less than the smallest class mark -
Xmax
= one course width more than the largest class mark -
Xscl
= the class width
Fix the Ys in terms of your frequencies, namely:
-
Ymin
= 0 -
Ymax
= the highest frequency (if itsouth a relative frequency histogram, you lot can use 1) -
Yscl
= some convenient fraction ofYmax
Are y'all plotting a distribution using ShadeNorm
?
Please see that section of this folio.
My screen is covered with horizontal or vertical lines.
This sometimes happens afterward zooming, or if you lot manually alter some window parameters. What happens is that the tick marks are so closely spaced that they merge together visually.
Press [WINDOW
] and adjust the Xscl
or Yscl
or both. Tick marks will appear every Xscl
units left and right, and yous want that to exist a reasonable fraction of the range betwixt Xmin
and Xmax
. Tick marks will announced every Yscl
units upwardly and down, and you want that to be a reasonable fraction of the range between Ymin
and Ymax
.
My screen is completely night, every pixel filled in.
This means both your Xscl
and Yscl
values are too small. Set up this on the WINDOW
screen, as explained above, under My screen is covered with horizontal or vertical lines.
In that location are no tick marks on my graph.
Is your grid turned on?
Press [
second
] [FORMAT
] (the shifted [ZOOM
] fundamental) and verify that GridOn
is highlighted. If not, cursor to it and printing [ENTER
].
Check your X and Y scales.
Press [WINDOW
] and look at Xscl
. It should be greater than 0 and less than the range from Xmin
to Xmax
. For instance, if Xmin
is −20 and Xmax
is twenty, the range is 40 and you might desire Xscl
to exist 2, 5, or x.
As well on the WINDOW
screen, await at Yscl
. It should be greater than 0 and less than the range from Ymin
to Ymax
. For instance, if Ymin
is −10 and Ymax
is ten, the range is xx and you might want Yscl
to be 1 or v.
Printing [Y=
]. Expect at Y1=
, Y2=
, and so on. Cursor to the equal sign for each unwanted part, and press [ENTER
]. You lotll need to cursor down to examine Y8=
, Y9=
, and Y0=
, because the Y=
screen shows only seven functions at a fourth dimension.
Printing [GRAPH
] to redraw the graph.
I cant graph more than one equation at a time.
Are there funny arrows at the left of your Y=
screen?
The illustration and solution are courtesy of Jesse Phillips, who cites a page from the Texas Instruments support site that has since been removed by TI for some reason:
In order to select boosted graphs, the Transformation Graphing App will need to be uninstalled from the TI-83 Plus Family and TI-84 Plus Family unit. Uninstalling the App does not erase information technology from the calculator, it disables it from interfering with the normal graphing modes. Beneath are the steps to successfully uninstall the App.
- Press [
APPS
] key- Select
Transfrm
from the menu- Press
one:Uninstall
My normal distribution from ShadeNorm
looks wrong.
Is too much shaded in for the limits you fix?
You demand to articulate each drawing earlier making the next. Locate Depict
as the shifted [PRGM
] central almost the middle of the keyboard. Printing [2d
] [Draw
], then [one
] to paste ClrDraw
to the home screen, then [ENTER
].
Echo your ShadeNorm
command.
Does the distribution non appear at all, or simply in part?
You demand to prepare your window parameters. Printing [WINDOW
] and then set them as follows. (The numbers in parentheses are for a standard normal distribution, with mean=0 and standard deviation=one, where you lot specify only 2 parameters to ShadeNorm
.)
-
Xmin
= mean minus 4 standard deviations (For standard ND, apply -iv.) -
Xmax
= hateful plus iv standard deviations (For standard ND, use iv.) -
Xscl
= standard deviation (For standard ND, use 1.) -
Ymin
= 0 -
Ymax
= 0.4 divided by standard deviationremember you can enter the expression and let the TI-83/84 do the arithmetic for yous (For standard ND, utilise 0.four) -
Yscl
= 0.ane divided by standard deviation (For standard ND, use 0.one)
After setting the window parameters, press [2d
] [QUIT
] to render to the home screen, then [2nd
] [ENTER
] [ENTER
] to re-execute the ShadeNorm
control.
Other Troubles
Many TI-83/84 owners dont realize that the contrast is adjustable. Heresouth how:
- Printing and release the gold [
2nd
] button. Verify that the blinking upwards pointer appears in the display. - Printing and concord the blue up or down pointer key to increase or decrease dissimilarity, until the display is to your liking. Be alert: the display will modify quickly.
The figurer volition remember your contrast setting; you dont have to adjust it every time you turn the calculator on.
Wheres the correlation coefficient?
Youve executed a regression from the STAT CALC
menu. You lot get the slope and intercept all right, just where are r and r?
For some reason, your TI-83/84 comes from the factory configured non to display correlation coefficients. Y'all demand to make a i-fourth dimension mode setting then that these are displayed in futurity regressions:
- Press [
2nd
] [CATALOG
] (the shifted [0
] key). - To motion to the beginning of the Ds, press the [
x−1
] primal. (A dark-green D is printed above that cardinal. Practice non press the green [ALPHA
] cardinal kickoff, because theItemize
control automatically puts the TI-83/84 in blastoff mode.) - Apply the arrow keys to move to
DiagnosticOn
. - Press [
ENTER
] to select the command, and [ENTER
] again to execute it.
You dont need to re-enter your regression command. But printing [second
] [ENTER
] and [second
] [ENTER
] again to recall information technology, then [ENTER
] to execute it.
